Welcome, I am an archaeologist and Professor of Archaeology at the University of Manchester (see www.manchester.ac.uk). This web site provides an introduction to my research interests, field projects, and publications. My research interests are varied, but broadly categorised, they include archaeological theory, theoretical and methodological approaches to the archaeology of identities, and to religion and ritual, the ethnoarchaeology of ritual practices, and the archaeology of shrines and sacrifice in both prehistoric and historic contexts. I am also interested in ethnobotany, Islamic archaeology, the Iron Age archaeology of sub-Saharan Africa, and the source analysis of archaeological materials. You will find detail and links to publications here on all these (and other aspects of my research) as well as my field projects among the Tallensi of Northern Ghana, in Timbuktu and Gao in Mali, in the capital of Early Islamic Bahrain, on bead-making in Western India, on the Dahlak Islands off the coast of Eritrea, and my participation in the Komaland project also in Northern Ghana. I hope you find this web site of interest and please do contact me with any questions or comments you may have (Tim.Insoll@manchester.ac.uk). |
